What does the pawfect beginnings puppy program involve?

Our Puppy Program is designed to give your puppy the best possible start to their grooming journey, helping them build confidence, trust and positive associations with grooming from an early age.

Over three weeks, your puppy will gradually be introduced to the sights, sounds, sensations and routines of a professional grooming salon. Rather than expecting them to be comfortable with everything from their very first visit, we take the time to introduce new experiences at a pace that suits each individual puppy.
And because every puppy is different, there is no pressure to rush the process. Our goal is to create a positive foundation for a lifetime of happy grooming visits.

WEEK ONE — THE SPA INTRODUCTION

Their first visit is all about creating a positive first impression.

Your puppy will enjoy their first professional bath and blow dry, including our luxurious ISB Spa Bath. This special experience combines premium Iv San Bernard products with a calming ozone spa rinse to gently care for your puppy’s developing skin and coat, while introducing them to the sensations of professional bathing in a calm and positive way.

The Puppy Spa experience includes:

● Gentle cleansing with a premium, puppy-suitable Iv San Bernard product
● A calming ozone spa rinse
● Nourishing ISB conditioner for the skin and coat
● Professional blow-dry and brushing

Unlike a regular bath, our Puppy Spa is designed to make their very first grooming experience extra special, while gently introducing them to water, bathing, brushing, drying and the salon environment.

We’ll also begin introducing your puppy to the sounds and sensations of professional grooming, including the dryer and grooming equipment, while allowing them time to become comfortable with their groomer.

WEEK TWO — THE LITTLE TIDY

Now that your puppy has had their first experience with us, we can gradually build on what they have already learned.

Their second visit includes another bath and blow dry, along with a gentle tidy around areas such as the eyes, face and feet.

At this stage, the focus isn’t on achieving a perfectly polished haircut. Your puppy may still be getting used to having their face held, scissors near them and their feet handled, so we keep things light, positive and age-appropriate.

Each new experience is introduced at a pace that helps your puppy feel safe and successful.

WEEK THREE — THE BIG GROOM

By their third visit, we’ll begin working towards your puppy’s first full professional groom.

We’ll gradually introduce clippers, scissors and the different sensations involved in a complete grooming appointment, building on everything they have experienced during their first two visits.

Where possible, we’ll complete the full groom. However, the service may be adjusted or completed over additional sessions depending on your puppy’s confidence, comfort level, behaviour and coat condition.
Their safety and emotional wellbeing will always come first.

EVERY PUPPY IS DIFFERENT

Some puppies take to grooming like they were born for it, while others need a little more time, patience and encouragement and that’s completely normal.
If your puppy needs an additional session before progressing to their full groom, we’re more than happy to accommodate them. We would much rather take an extra visit to build their confidence than rush them through an experience that may leave them feeling overwhelmed.

Our Puppy Program is about creating trust, not simply ticking off a grooming checklist.

By taking things one step at a time, we can help your puppy learn that the salon is a safe, positive place and that grooming is simply part of being a very well-pampered Dog Barber regular.

When can my puppy start grooming?

Gentle grooming preparation can begin at home from an early age. Regularly introducing your puppy to brushing and calm handling of their paws, ears, face and body can help them feel more comfortable with grooming as they grow.
These little at-home experiences can make a big difference. Keeping sessions short, gentle and positive helps your puppy learn that being handled and groomed is nothing to worry about.
Once your puppy is ready to visit the salon, our Puppy Program builds on this foundation by gradually introducing them to professional bathing, brushing, drying, clippers, scissors and the many different sensations of a grooming appointment.
Your puppy’s age and vaccination requirements will determine when they can safely begin their professional grooming journey. If you’re unsure when the right time is to book their first visit, we’re always happy to chat with you.

Why is early grooming important?

Introducing your puppy to grooming early can help them become familiar with being handled, brushed, bathed, dried and groomed before they require regular full grooming appointments.
Positive experiences during puppyhood can help build confidence and make future grooming visits a much more comfortable experience.

Does my puppy have to complete the full groom in Week Three?

No. Every puppy progresses differently.

Our goal is to work towards a full groom during their third visit, but we will never rush a puppy simply to complete the service. Their grooming experience may be adjusted or an additional session recommended if they need more time to become comfortable.
Their confidence, comfort, behaviour and coat condition will all be taken into consideration.

What if my puppy needs more than three sessions?

That’s completely okay.

Three weeks provides a gentle introduction to professional grooming, but it isn’t a magic number. Some puppies will be ready for their full groom after three visits, while others may benefit from an additional session or two.
We’re more than happy to tailor the program to your puppy and give them the extra time they need.

What can I do at home to prepare my puppy?

Keep it simple, short and positive.

Regularly brush your puppy and gently handle their paws, ears, face and body. You can also introduce them to the sound of a hairdryer from a safe distance, always keeping the experience calm and rewarding.
The aim isn’t to recreate a grooming salon at home it’s simply to help your puppy become comfortable with being handled and experiencing new sensations.

What happens after Pawfect Beginnings?

Once your puppy has completed their introduction to grooming, they can transition into regular grooming appointments suited to their individual coat, grooming needs and preferred style.
We’ll work with you to establish a grooming schedule that keeps their skin and coat healthy while continuing to build on the confidence they’ve developed through the program.
